Day 27 Alcatraz July 8, 2001

! stayed an extra day @ the hostel in San Francisco to see stuff. ! took
the cable cars to Market St. ! met a girl from Italy and we spent the day
wandering around. We went up Coit Tower where you can see the entire city.
Lots of photos. This evening ! went to Alcatraz on the Ferry. ! got to tour
the cell blocks and look around the island. It started out as a fort then
became a minimum security military prison before it was converted to Maximum
Security. There were 5 escapes. None of them were ever found and are presumed
dead. The water is very cold and it's a mile and a quarter to San Francisco
w/ a 4 mph current. There is a triathlon every year that starts out there and
they swim to shore so it can be done. Probably in a wetsuit. 0 miles.
