Day 24 500 Miles July 5, 2001
Battered AA battery count 14
As ! stated last time, !'m tired of the desert. Too hot and too
dangerous. ! got on the Greyhound in Vegas and took it to LA. The bus depot
was crowded and ! had a bunch of stuff. ! dragged MY trailer over to the guys
loading and went back for the bike box. This really friendly guy offered to
help w/ the box and then when ! got on the bus ! ended up sitting next to
him. For some reason he felt he had to confess to ME that he was stowing
away. He had come to Vegas 5 days earlier w/ 2 friends. After a couple days
there was a knock on their motel door. The cops took the 2 friends away for
robbery. And they took the return bus tickets. This guy had spent the last 2
nights sleeping @ the bus station. First stop LA. On the way we stopped in
Barstow, CA @ the Amtrak station. It's a regular Greyhound food stop. There
were 4 busses there and one little store about 10' by 15' inside. One lady
working the counter, two cash registers and two microwaves. With the whole
store packed and people lined up out the door she handled everything
efficiently.. ! had to go back and congratulate her on her focus. Then after
waiting around off we went to Gilroy, CA. the Garlic Capital of the World.
They process a lot of garlic there. ! got there a little after 5am. Some
sleep on the bus. Actual riding was only about 2.5 miles.
