Day 21 Easy? day July 2, 2001

! looked @ the map. Losing 2,200' to Kingman, AZ looked like it shouldn't
be too hard. ! figured ! could do another century and then an easy ride into
Vegas. ! started out rolling easy and fast then up some then up some more.
Not too bad. A couple short steep drops and then mostly level. ! didn't
really want to do all the descending really fast. Just gradually over the
whole ride. Well, somewhere ! missed the descending. Up a hundred feet then
down about 500'. It started getting really hot. 110*. The road was almost
flat. A "false flat". And once ! got into the Mojave desert the wind started
blowing hard. ! was in MY granny gear doing almost 10 mph. Finally, ! made it
to Kingman for lunch @ Cracker Barrel. Then another 20 miles to Chloride to
camp. That put ME about 80 from Vegas. On 93 out of Kingman there was a
crosswind. The tumbleweeds were a-tumbling. They would rush up to the edge of
the road, look for cars and then dash across when it was clear. ! saw a road
runner too. After turning off 93 onto the road to Chloride ! was heading
straight into the wind and going uphill. Whew. ! figured ! could make the 4
miles in a half hour. A mile into it a guy turned around and offered to let
ME load up the Jackal in his cattle trailer. He dropped ME off @ the town
park/campground. 88 miles today. Maybe Vegas tomorrow.
