Day 88 19 1/2 Hours September 7, 2001

Battered AA battery count 42

That's how long it took ME to cross Rhode Island. And 12 of those hours ! was in the hotel. ! didn't even go straight across. !'m not sure if Rhode Island is a county of TA, CT or NY. They didn't bother putting up signs @ the borders. Probably so no one would laugh @ them. ! got up this morning and headed for breakfast. ! asked for Tobasco for MY eggs as always. They didn't have any. They had some other stuff that wasn't very hot and also some habanero sauce. They said to use it sparingly. The bottle said add one drop @ a time so ! poured it on one egg thick and started eating. It burned. MY eyes watered. ! took another bite. It got worse. ! kept eating. ! wasn't learning anything. By the second bite ! was crying. ! couldn't see. ! didn't finish that egg. ! tried OJ and wiping MY tongue w/ a napkin. It still burned. ! made it out alive and even ate everything. The hills are brutal steep. It was hot by the time ! was out riding. ! usually don't have any trouble w/ MY food, but today ! wanted to hurl @ the top of the climbs. ! didn't though. That lasted for an hour and a half. Not long after that ! got something in MY eye. ! rubbed it and nearly went blind. ! had washed MY hands after ! ate, but still it hurt. All along the way in RI little caterpillars were trying to migrate across the road. Most were unsuccessful. In some spots the lanes were covered by mashed caterpillars. ! got quite a few MYself. Around lunch time ! wasn't really hungry yet except for ice cream. Milk for poison control. I found a couple orange cream bars and a cream soda. ! felt better. The landmarks were passing swiftly now that most of the climbing was done. Still some climbs and they were slow, but more descending. ! had a craving for a Coke. A thick one w/ all the sugar in it. ! got one. First one in months. ! found the campground long before dark and that is all that happened today of interest. 68 miles.
