Day 86 Martha Stewart's Vineyard September 5, 2001
It's not really Martha Stewart's Vineyard. It does look like her kind of
place though. While ! was @ the library today ! found out for sure. Thomas
Mayhew bought Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands for 40
pounds. He named this island after his daughter Martha who went on to found
AA. Just kidding about the AA thing. ! rode around most of the west side of
the island today. Then to the library in Vineyard Haven, TA to checque the
ferry schedule to New Bedford, TA tomorrow. ! also found out that ! can make
6 'cross races instead of just States. ! looked @ the Amtrak schedule. It
leaves New Orleans, LA @ 1:55 pm and arrives in Denver @ 8:05 am 2 days
later. !'ll have a 6 hour layover in Chicago, IL. ! also altered an option
sell order so it might actually sell. ! can always use a little extra money.
The roads here are all narrow and lots of traffic. The trees come right to
the edge of the road almost and lots of those stone fences the Patriots hid
behind to shoot redcoats. It felt a little slow on the way west, but ! was
actually moving faster than !'m used to. Just pushing the same effort in a
bigger gear. !'ll need bigger chainrings when ! return. When ! turned around
to go back up island (that's east) ! had a couple sprints that seemed like
all ! could do was accelerate. ! came by the construction crew blocking one
lane and accelerated up the grade to intimidate the cop into stopping traffic
for ME. ! was in MY biggest gear and just kept it churning. ! came over the
top of the steep part going as fast as ! had started @ the bottom and quite a
bit faster than ! had been cruising earlier. Then on another occasion ! saw
some cars behind ME on a climb. ! sped up and before ! knew what was
happening ! was really moving. Add 5 mph and it would have been a Lance
attack. ! think !'ll have some popcorn soon. !'m a little uncertain about
where !'ll be for tomorrow night. ! won't make it to New Bedford, TA 'til 1
pm. That doesn't leave ME much time to get across RI. !'ll have to go way
north and into Providence then almost all the was south so ! won't make it
through all in one day. Probably only about 24 hours including sleep time
though. It really felt easier w/out the B.O.B. And ! managed to stand up to
climb and sprint. It only took a few miles to work that out. 46 miles.
