Day 84 Riding to Cape Cod on Labor Day September 3, 2001

! was up @ 6 this morning and making breakfast. Out on the streets by 9.
It took a few hours to get out of town. Even then there are houses
everywhere. ! turned and started up a hill ahead of 3 mountain bikers enroute
to the trail. ! was nearly outclimbing them. Their leader was having none of
that so he led them up and 2 of them passed ME before the top. ! passed all
three on the way down the other side then halfway up they came by again. It
must have been embarrassing for them. ! stopped for lunch @ a pizza joint
just a few miles from the campsite to get directions. They all talk funny
around these here parts. The driver told ME it's just a few miles down the
road. "You can't miss it". ! missed it. By about 4 miles. ! decided to go on
to the next campground since ! had lots of time and want to make tomorrow a
short day so ! can have more time on Martha's Vineyard. There are 2 bridges
over the Cape Cod Canal. ! am still on the north side. !'ll go over the
bridge in the morning after all the vacationers are gone. ! went down to the
Atlantic Ocean beach after setting up camp @ Scussett Beach State Park. Then
! set fire to some wood lying around the site. It's just embers now. ! can
hear all the boats coming through the canal. ! found a live starfish in a
tide pool and a little crab too. 70 miles.
