Day 63 By Law ! Am in Great Britain August 13, 2001

MY 5:30 wake up never came. Luckily ! woke @ 5:40 and took off. After
breakfast ! went down to the harbor. SS Columbia is a 41' Robinson design
sailing ship. It's last voyage was from Hawaii to Victoria, BC. The skipper
is a yachting instructor from South Africa. He needed a crew of 4 to sail to
Vancouver. Mostly to help pay for fuel etc. We set sail around 8:30 am. After
motoring out of the harbor we raised the sails to catch the small amount of
wind available. Out the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Harro Straits. We say a
few dolphins and seals. No whales. We stayed just on the Canadian side of the
border By mid afternoon we reached our destination for the night and anchored
in Broward bay on the North side of North Pender Island. The depth finder
said the water was 10 meters deep and 15* C. 3 of us went in for a swim. A
lot of shivering and paddling about in the salty water then a lap around the
boat before climbing back aboard. After "disarming" the dinghy all 5 of us
paddled a very crooked path to the cafe on shore. We walked up the road to
the mall. A very small mall then farther up the road. We found blackberry
bushes thick along the roadside for a snack. A fawn wandered out to the edge
of the road. No fear. The Aussie was nearly run over several times. After a
long bit of walking we decided to turn around. The Aussie mentioned
hitchhiking and stuck out his thumb. Half a second later a van pulled over to
give us a ride. A Canuk talking Canadian eh. How do Canadians spell Canada? C
eh, N eh, D eh. Back @ the cafe ! got a milk shake and we headed to the bar
next door to play pool. Back to the boat to make dinner by sunset. Queen on
the stereo. 1 mile.
