Day 61 Surrounded by Canadians August 11, 2001
! was up pretty early so ! decided to try to make the 12:45 ferry from
Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC instead of the 4:15. ! made it and even had
time to feed since it was running 15 minutes late. It's a 1.5 hour ride
across the Straight of Juan de Fuca. About 20 miles. In canada we all got
herded into the customs building to answer the standard questions. ! guess !
had some wrong answers. They pulled MY records and discovered MY long string
of burglary arrests from back when ! was a foot shorter and tattooed. !'m
only allowed to stay in the country for 2 weeks now. !'m also not allowed to
work in canada. ! hadn't really planned on job hunting up here in the frozen
waste land, but now ! think ! will. Some of the hostels let you stay free if
you do some cleaning. ! think !'ll checque in Vancouver and Toronto. ! was
going to do it here this morning except that !'ve already paid and they don't
do refunds. There seems to be a lot of canadians around town. Instead of the
normal background noise of cars or crickets it's all "eh, hoser" After
studying the ferry schedule ! discovered that ! have to go 26 km (16 miles)
to catch a ferry to Vancouver, BC. That one doesn't even go all the way
there. It would drop ME about 25 km South and then !'d have to ride the rest
of the way in city traffic. Whilst puzzling over this dilemma ! noticed a
posting on the bulletin board. An excellent opportunity even if ! didn't need
it. It'll cost ME $25 CDN, but those are just like nickels almost. That comes
to about $16 in real money. ! think !'ll wait to reveal the adventure for a
few days. Just to build the suspense. 51 miles.
