Day 54 Into Seattle August 4, 2001
! took the ferry over again and rode the bus into town. On weekends the
ferry doesn't go to the downtown piers. ! wandered around. ! could hear the
Blue Angels performing, but couldn't get any good shots of them. ! found the
Original Starbucks in the Pike Market just a couple blocks from "the pig".
The pig is a giant bronze piggy bank that people drop their spare change into
and they use it to help homeless people. It has become a landmark. ! actually
heard a guy on his cell phone telling someone to meet him by the pig. Earlier
this summer the lady who cast the original pig made 150 fiberglass casts and
distributed them to local businesses who sponsored them. They, in turn, had
artists alter them and place them all around town. Try www.pigsonparade.org
to see a bunch of them. There are people wandering the town trying to see all
of them. This is the coolest hostel !'ve been to yet. There was a group by
the barn when ! returned square dancing. There's a little airport just down
the road. ! think one more day here and !'ll work MY way to Victoria, BC.
Ride some and take some ferries then to Vancouver, BC. 0 miles.
