Day 49 17 Miles to Breakfast July 30, 2001
The family that owns the campground also has a restaurant just around the bend. ! had
dinner there last night. They said there might be someone there by 9 in the morning
who could cook breakfast. There is supposed to be food @ the next visitor center up
the hill. ! went the 8 miles up the hill in the fog w/out the B.O.B or the panniers. ! felt
like Lance. ! was climbing fast and easy. ! found the center. The gift shoppe was open,
but the restaurant was closed until 11am. ! had wanted to be on the road by 11 so !
headed back down to the place by the camp. They managed to rustle up some grub for
ME. From there it was a couple miles to the junction w/ 505 to Toledo, WA. ! thought
for sure Toledo would have a laundromat. They don't. Then a few more miles to the
Lewis & Clark State Park campground. ! got here early. Just in time for the
entertainment. The new campground host was moving in. They have a giant Dodge
diesel pickup pulling a 38' trailer. Their spot is barely longer than that and @ the top of
the hill w/ a little kink in the road. It took them 15-20 minutes to get it backed in. Then
out came the sides. It expands. Then up went the satellite dish. Since ! had so much
time ! went to the gas station/grocery and got some stuff for breakfast. They had a
basket of eggs so ! got just 2, some beef jerky and a muffin for breakfast. ! haven't
cooked any eggs on the trip yet because ! could only get 1/2 dozens and didn't want to
carry them around to break or spoil. !'m already planning what to cook once ! get to the
hostels though. Blueberry bread, eggs, bacon, OJ, burritos. Maybe huevos rancheros
too. Mmmmm. And, of course, espresso in Seattle. It's just one of the things you have
to do. ! also had time to true MY wheel and lube MY cables. ! think !'m going to ditch
this back wheel in Tacoma, WA and get a 36 spoke one. The 32 spoke is just not
tough enough. The rim is battered and the spokes don't match. The hub is OK so !'ll
send that home to build up for 'cross season. Sunny and warm today. An occasional
bout w/ the wind. Not too bad. ! was flying most of the time. 46 miles.
