Day 47 Washington State July 28, 2001
! left late in the morning after it started to get a little brighter out. ! was afraid it might
continue raining. ! got a few blocks and it was drizzling lightly. ! could see blue sky up
ahead so ! continued on. It got much nicer. The sun was out and no wind. There were a
few hills, but nothing to tough. ! saw the bridge from a few miles outside of Astoria,
OR. It is 4 miles long and really high. The road has to circle around to climb up that
high. ! hear there are only two narrow lanes and no shoulder. 101 turns into 30 in
Astoria and that's the way ! went. In town ! bought MYself a Jerry Garcia tie. He did
some cool designs. Then on to Westport, OR to catch the ferry. IT goes to Puget
Island, WA then hwy. 409 goes across the island then across the bridge to Cathlamet,
WA. !'ve finished off another state. MY map doesn't show many state parks w/
campgrounds so !'m not sure exactly where !'ll be staying for the next few nights.
Outside Cathlamet ! found a mobile home park that takes RVs and tents. It's not very
nice but it's about halfway to the state park outside Mt. St. Helens. A few more days
and !'ll hit Tacoma. Perhaps a hotel there. There is a Performance bike shoppe there.
!'m going to get some new handlebars and tape to replace in Vancouver. The bars are
as old as the seat post was. It doesn't appear damaged, but ! don't want to wait for it to
snap. Probably a new chain and other parts too. 47 miles for day 47.
