Day 43 Perseverance July 24, 2001
! was on the road early this am. It was 12 miles to breakfast so no waiting around. !
could see MY breath. ! thought about putting on the arm warmers, but decided to just
keep riding to warm up. ! did. Then got cold while feeding. The wind today was not bad.
On occasion it was brutal, but not often. It also warmed up quite nicely by mid day.
Into the 70s ! think. And sunny. It was fabulous. !'m not sure how the fog went away
w/out pulling in the winds unless perhaps the water is warmer here than on most of the
coast. Perhaps not as deep so it heats up faster like the shore does. About 1pm !
looked up and saw a sign for a model RR open to the public. ! darted across the street
to view. The little old guy came out and rambled for an hour about every highway and
RR between Denver and the Pacific. He had most of a single car garage filled w/ HO
scale Santa Rosa, CA. A whole lot of rail and all of it filled. He basically had a folded
figure 8 setup. Off to Depoe Bay, OR for lunch. ! had MY first clam chowder. In a bread
bowl of course. Actually the bread bowl was just tossed into the regular bowl. ! was
feeling good most all day. Perhaps it's because ! figure only 3 more days on the coast
then inland to the warm still air. ! can hardly wait. ! was attacking the climbs 'til MY
legs burned. They were mostly short and not too steep. ! had figured on 60 miles
today. In Lincoln City, OR ! saw a sign that said OR state park. The road name was
the same as the campground name so w/ some trepidation ! made the turn. 5 miles of
curving and undulating tarmac later ! was back out on 101 North of town. ! had gone all
the way around Devil's Lake to no avail. ! backtracked a couple miles and there it was
just a block from the highway. ! think !'ll have breakfast @ Sambo's tomorrow. !
remember seeing and feeding @ Sambo's a few times as a small child. Then they
disappeared. There's one barely a mile away from here. 69 miles.
