Day 42 Wind & Hills July 23, 2001

! got a late start today owing to the fact that the hotel had HBO and ! decided to stay
up 'til 2am watching "The Perfect Storm". Not a bad movie. ! got going about 11am.
Headed into Reedsport, OR for breakfast. Too late. ! ended up having a Garden Burger
and a basket of fries for breakfast. Just out of town ! hit a nice long climb. Long and
steady. Not too steep. There were more climbs. Most w/ long fast descents on the
other side. ! stopped for groceries in Florence, OR and since ! had just eaten recently !
got a banana and a Hershey bar for a snack. The wind really picked up while ! took MY
break. ! went the rest of the way through town w/out getting into double digit speeds.
The wind continued and the climbs got steeper. ! was traversing the edge of Cape Mtn.
1,469' peak. Then a long descent to where ! spotted the Hacetas Head Lighthouse.
One more mile of climbing and it was downhill and straight all the way to the
campground. ! thought it was about 50 miles to the campsite but it turned out to be
only 40 so ! went back a couple miles to the lighthouse for the tour. ! had to climb the
hill ! just came down then down the hill ! had climbed earlier then down the side road to
the beach. From the beach it was a 1/2 mile hike up to the lighthouse. You may have
guessed by now that ! had to climb again to get back to the campground. ! talked to
the ranger. It looks like the place ! had planned to stay tomorrow night is too close. !'ll
go on to another campground then the next day to the Seaside, OR hostel. That
means !'ll be hitting WA on Thursday or Friday depending on how long ! stay there.
Maybe some kayaking. 46 miles.
