Day 38 Rain July 19, 2001
It rained this morning. ! was asleep through most of it. It wasn't too
hard which is good since ! didn't put up the rain fly last night. Very little
leaked in. This tent works well. It gets bitterly cold. ! could see MY breath
when ! left this morning. After being inside w/ everything closed up for a
short while it gets nice and cozy. That's w/out the rain fly. If ! put it on
! would pump out the sweat and it would condense on the inside of the fly. !
got up, walked on the beach and went into town for breakfast. Then to the
bike shoppe. Yesterday, in Crescent City, CA, when ! needed a seat post, !
was advised to go to the Escape Hatch. "It's just about a mile down the
road". ! went looking for it and found a dead end. Then ! found another
shoppe. Well, today, ! went to the bike shoppe in Brookings, OR. Guess which
shoppe ! found. The Escape Hatch. ! got MY part and another tool. No sales
taxes around these parts. It's odd. ! figured it would be about 58 miles
including the 8 running around town. Then around 20 tomorrow. It was quite a
few more than that and lots of climbing. ! went around Humbug Mtn. The climbs
where steep and when it was flat or downhill the winds were ferocious. When !
stopped for lunch ! found out how far it would be to the camp. Farther than !
had anticipated. ! was counting down the miles slowly. Then the tenths.
There's the turn. Cape Blanco State Park 3 miles. Argh. Moments later.
Campground 5 miles. The wind and the hills are making ME stronger. @ least
they better be. Tomorrow will be an easy day. About 30 miles to the hostel in
Bandon. ! may take a day off there too. !'m going to sleep late and then just
spin easy. !'ve earned a rest day. 73 miles
