Day 37 A Good Day July 18, 2001
"I don't take anything for granted. Now I only have good days and great
days" Lance. Right out of the hostel driveway was uphill. Uphill for 3.7
miles. Then a short flat and more climbing. @ least ! wasn't cold. And ! felt
ok climbing after a bit. It's tough starting out that hard w/out any time to
warm up. @ 6.7 miles ! was heading downhill when ! felt it. MY saddle moved
back and down. ! knew what was happening. ! had dreaded it. MY seat post had
snapped. !'ve had it happen 3 times in the past. It was always sudden.
Everything was ok then suddenly the saddle is on the ground. This time was
different. It split on the front but the post was too strong to tear apart
completely ! was able to nearly pull the whole thing out before it broke
completely ! had to adjust the rack and put what was left of the post back in
so ! could ride to the next town. Crescent City, CA. About 9 miles w/ the
seat way too low. ! got a new post and a new blinker. Every thing set up and
!'m off again. 2pm and !'ve only managed 18 miles. About 20 more to the
border. ! had to make a few stops to get everything adjusted but it was
working well. ! was making good time and finally got into Oregon. That's
where they invented oregano. Brookings is the first town and they have the
obligatory info place. It was just hard to find. ! did find it next to a used
RV place. Since they where open ! went into a couple. If you ever get a
chance to go in one of the big ones do it. Those things are amazing. The
entire coast it seems is covered w/ state parks, but very few have camping.
There was one 2 miles away and the next one was farther than ! wanted to go.
I got into camp and decided to do some maintenance. Damn good thing ! did
too. If ! hadn't ! wouldn't have snapped the seat post binder bolt. ! have to
ride into town tomorrow to get a $5 part so MY panniers don't swing into MY
wheel. Then come back to break camp. Good thing ! stopped right outside of
town. ! realized tonight that for the last couple weeks !'ve pretty much been
living on the beach. 47 miles.
