Day 34 Avenue of the Giants July 15, 2001

! felt ! should do about 75 miles today to make up for taking off early
yesterday. About 30 miles out ! turned onto the Avenue of the Giants. Highway
254 runs nearly parallel to 101, but through the redwood forest. ! also have
been informed that just before last night's campsite ! reached the northern
terminus of Highway 1. It's all 101 from here. Another sunny day. There was
wind though and some climbing. ! broke 2 more spokes today. About half way up
Ave. of the Giants ! stopped @ the visitor center. The only campsite before
Eureka was a mere 2 miles up the road. ! had wanted to camp a bit south of
Eureka, but didn't want to go farther than that. So, being hungry and lazy,
!'m now just outside Weott, CA. ! found a little store (Mama Su's) and was
tempted by the 1/2 pound hot dog. After that is was across the street to the
campground. ! was all set up by 4pm. ! went to the beach of the Eel river and
read for quite awhile. Then back to the store for a couple microwaved
chimichangas and a YooHoo. They had a couple recliners in the corner and
Opera on the boom box. Nice little place. Early to bed tonight so ! can do
many miles tomorrow. ! want to make the Redwood Forest hostel for Tuesday
night. That should be doable. 52 miles.
